10 Tips for Effective Non-Fiction Book Reading

Updated: Jun 15

Non-fiction books are not just meant to convey information but to bring about a positive impact on our lives. This is why, when delving into informational books, the focus should be on learning rather than simply reading. Today, we will discuss effective strategies for reading non-fiction books.

Many individuals prioritize quantity over quality when it comes to reading, neglecting the importance of extracting valuable insights from books.

While some manage to read 52 books a year without retaining much, others are able to gain profound life lessons from the same number of books.

Therefore, I will outline 5 habits that will help you make the most out of the knowledge presented in non-fiction books, enabling you to enhance your learning experience rather than just increasing the number of books read.

Guidelines for Maximizing Reading of Non-Fiction Books

1. Review each chapter thoroughly.

Upon completing a chapter in a non-fiction book, take a moment to review it. Spend three to five minutes summarizing the key points before proceeding to the next chapter.

Each new chapter introduces fresh lessons, perspectives, and information. Therefore, take a break after each chapter to give your brain time to digest the content and transfer it from short-term to long-term memory.

To maximize this process, I suggest conducting a brief review (3 to 5 minutes) after finishing the chapter.

  1. Close your eyes and remember the main point of the chapter.

  2. Quickly review the highlighted or underlined text in this chapter.

In my situation, I jot down 1-3 key points on the final page of the chapter or in the reading tracker section of my journal. This simple practice can assist in retaining and recalling the knowledge gained from books.

2. Emphasize the lessons learned and sources of inspiration.

Do you read underlined books? So do I. This is a basic way to improve your memory by working for your eyes and hands together.

In order to personalize the content of the book, I employ three distinct methods of highlighting:

  1. I emphasize and underline important lessons.

  2. When a phrase sparks an idea or inspiration, I add a "!" at the end and attach a small post-it note to jot down my thoughts.

  3. I designate the 3-5 most crucial chapters with a "*" next to their titles for easy reference during future readings.

3. Consider reading a book multiple times.

It is essential to read non-fiction books repeatedly. With the abundance of new knowledge being published, there is a wealth of material to take in. When you discover valuable books that guide your life, I recommend keeping them and revisiting their content two or three times.

Books that are worth revisiting

In my situation, I consistently have books that I retain and revisit multiple times.

Each time I revisit these books, I uncover fresh insights that eluded me before, or come across valuable highlights that I had previously marked. On subsequent readings, I pinpoint the essential chapters and revisit the notes I've gathered, or focus on the passages I've highlighted.

4. Share what you learn.

Learning is about putting knowledge into context and sharing valuable lessons with others. By sharing what you've learned, you deepen your insights and reinforce your understanding.

I often share lessons from books or real-life experiences with acquaintances, as well as online on blogs and social media platforms.

Joining a book club can also be a great way to enhance your learning experience.

Consider forming a book club with a small group and engaging in discussions with strangers to exchange ideas and wisdom.

Sharing your insights with others can help accelerate your learning process.

5. Apply the knowledge you acquire.

When learning from a book, it is essential to apply the knowledge gained. While there is a plethora of knowledge available in books, the emphasis should be on extracting lessons that can be applied to one's own life. This aligns with the core purpose of knowledge books.

Improvement in life is contingent upon the application of acquired knowledge.

Many individuals consume books solely for the sake of acquiring knowledge.

Consider, for instance, the abundance of self-improvement literature and instructional eBooks. Without putting into practice the teachings from these resources, tangible results will not be evident.

Strive to be a creator rather than just a consumer of information.

Consumption may be effortless, but production requires effort. While it is easy to read about various topics, such as fitness or entrepreneurship, the real challenge lies in implementing those learnings. Simply accumulating knowledge without practical application holds little value.

Transform into a creator of knowledge.

To improve our lives, we engage in learning, studying, and even taking online courses. However, if we only absorb information without taking action, our progress will stall.

It is essential to have a clear purpose when reading educational material and focus on internalizing the lessons to apply them effectively.

The insights we derive from our learning journey are crucial steps towards becoming creators of knowledge.

Mere accumulation of knowledge does not guarantee success; knowledge serves as a catalyst on the path to success.

The true power lies in the practical application of knowledge.

Upon completing a book, it is beneficial to jot down at least three actionable points and implement the newfound knowledge before moving on to the next read. This approach not only enhances learning but propels us forward in life.

For those who enjoy journaling, keeping a journal aids in extracting knowledge from books.

Personally, I utilize a reading journal to monitor my learning progress and actions towards a better life.
