10 simple ways to save money when grocery shopping.

After the pandemic, it is more time to enjoy meals at home. So That’s why I get interested in how to save money on groceries. In this post, I share 10 simple ways I am reducing my grocery costs.

I’ve put together the methods I’ve tried.

Why don’t you try this?

I was able to save money because eating out decreased, but I can feel the increase in food prices like these days.

As I was thinking about a meal plan for following week today, I thought that saving food would be important to housewives.

1. Weekly meal plan.

If you want to save more, why don’t you make a meal plan.

In my case, every Friday evening, I always check my fridge, freezer and cupboards, before making my grocery list to see what I already have.

Based on the food I have, I decide what to eat next week.

If you have a meal planner, you can write it down by day of the week.

When the menu is decided for each day of the week, the items you must buy are displayed.

Write this item down on your shopping list.

If you do this, you can reduce waste because there is no need to buy another.

If you need a meal planner, you can download and use it as much as you like.

2. Refrigerator cleanup day.

You might wondering why I am talking about cleaning all of a sudden.

Maybe all housewives know. When you cook, there are leftovers.

You can use these foods to make new dishes, or serve buffet-style meals on a large plate with a sharing plate.

Using leftover vegetables in the refrigerator to prepare dinner saves a lot of time.

In my family, every Sunday evening is a day to clean the refrigerator. Vegetables have the advantage of cooking ingredients purchased, before they lose their freshness.

3. Grocery Shopping Budget

Always make a budget before you go grocery shopping.

My family goes grocery shopping on Saturday mornings.

Measure my budget by making a weekly meal plan on Friday evening and making a shopping list.

Whenever my husband goes grocery shopping, he sees me judging prices and gives me a pint.

Howevre, as a result, I could cut my monthly grocery bill by 2-3%.

Isn’t that great?

4. Meat Free Day.

One day of the week, set aside a meat free day. My family spend the day as a vegetarian.

In my case, I am Korean, so I don’t feel any burdened, but my husband (New Zealander) said it was difficult for a while, until got used to it.

Eventually, good news is that he lost weight and got reduced his belly fat.

Instead, you can make a meat-flavored paddy using tofu and beans and eat it instead of meat.

There are more benefits to taking care of your health than the benefits of saving money.

5. Foods to be purchased in bulk at a Large food market.

Among the large marts, there are marts with low prices.

Rice and canned foods are items that are purchased in bulk.

Our family plans and purchases on a monthly basis. I buy theses at a cheap supermarket.

Each family is different, but my family saved about $10 a month by using this method.

6. Buying unpackaged fruits or vegetables.

We all know that peeled and packaged potatoes are more expensive than their own.

In our household, I buy vegetables and fruit on a scale as needed.

7. Shopping with discount coupons or reward points.

Check for printable coupons or reward points before shopping.

Australia’s most popular rewards card is the Flybuy.

In the case of our family, when we pay our utility bills (electricity, gas, etc.) or shop at large stores, we often receive benefits with these points. It is good chance to purchase home appliances with the accumulated points.

8. Don’t be tempted by brands.

Buy in-store or off-brand when possible.

Of course, when a famous brand has a big sale or if there is an opportunity to get a big discount, you can buy the brand.

However, in most cases, don’t go after the brand too much.

9. Check blogger reviews

There are many blogs reviewing products or sharing information about the discount.

In my case, I subscribe to a few food bloggers to get meal plan ideas or get discount information. But don’t forget to make sure your information is correct before trying this method.

It is also a good idea to check the discount information in Shop Back.

10. Avoid shopping on an empty stomach.

This is a very basic tip, but often overlooked.

If you go to the store when you are really hungry, your willpower and self-control are much reduced.

So, you may have a hard time spending more and giving up impulse buying.
